Activation Guide
How to Activate on Steam
Three ways to redeem your Steam key — desktop app, browser, or mobile.
Method 1 — Recommended
Steam Desktop App
The Steam desktop client is the most reliable way to redeem a game key. Make sure you have the Steam application installed on your PC before getting started.
- Open the Steam application on your computer and sign in to your account if you aren't already logged in.
- Once you're on the Steam home screen, look at the top navigation bar. You'll see menu options including Store, Library, Community, and your account name. Click on "Games" in that top menu bar.
- A dropdown menu will appear. From the options listed, click "Activate a Product on Steam..."
- A new window will pop up — this is the Steam product activation wizard. Click Next to proceed past the welcome screen.
- You'll be shown the Steam Subscriber Agreement. Read through it and click "I Agree" to continue. You cannot proceed without accepting this.
- On the next screen, you'll see a text field labeled "Product Code." Carefully type or paste your key exactly as provided — including any dashes. Keys are typically formatted like: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
- Click Next. Steam will connect to its servers and verify your key. This usually takes just a few seconds.
- If the key is valid, Steam will display the name of the game it unlocks. Confirm it matches what you purchased, then click Next once more.
- Steam will add the game to your library and begin downloading it automatically, or you can choose to download it later. You'll receive a confirmation screen when activation is complete.
Method 2
Steam Browser (store.steampowered.com)
You can redeem a key directly through your browser without downloading anything, though this method occasionally has slower response times.
- Open any web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) and navigate to store.steampowered.com.
- Log into your Steam account by clicking the "Login" button in the top right corner of the page. Enter your username and password, and complete any two-factor authentication if prompted.
- Once logged in, hover over your account name or profile picture in the top right. A dropdown menu will appear.
- In that dropdown, look for and click "Games", then select "Activate a Product on Steam..." from the submenu. This will open the activation wizard in a new page.
- Click through the welcome screen and accept the Steam Subscriber Agreement when prompted.
- Enter your product key in the field provided. Double-check that you've copied it correctly — a single wrong character will cause the activation to fail.
- Click Next and wait for Steam to validate the key against its servers.
- Once validated, you'll see a confirmation showing the game name. Click Next to finalize. The game will be added to your library and will be available for download the next time you open the Steam desktop app.
Method 3
Steam Mobile App (iOS & Android)
The Steam mobile app allows you to redeem keys on the go directly from your phone or tablet.
- Download and open the Steam Mobile App on your device. It's available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
- Log into your Steam account. If you have Steam Guard enabled (which is recommended for account security), you may need to approve the login via a confirmation code.
- Once you're on the home screen of the app, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) typically located in the top left or bottom navigation bar, depending on your device.
- From the menu, tap on "Games" to expand that section, then tap "Activate a Product on Steam."
- A text input screen will appear. Carefully type your product key into the field. On mobile, pay extra attention to characters that are easy to confuse, such as the letter O and the number 0, or the letter I and the number 1.
- Tap Next or Submit to send the key for verification.
- Steam will verify the key and display the name of the game being unlocked. Confirm it's correct and tap Next to complete the activation.
- The game will now appear in your Steam library. To download it, you'll need to do so from the Steam desktop app on your PC, as the mobile app does not support game downloads.
